You approach this from deeply technical side. Yes, the repository is the same. But if we approach this from a user side or product side, there's very little in common. Although I can install Kubuntu, then install all of Gnome, and use only Gnome applications, that would be rather weird. Typically, user who installed Kubuntu has completely different set of applications he uses daily, and his user experience has nothing in common with user experience in Ubuntu.

Do you have a better solution, preferably one that does not require me to educate 350+ existing subscribers and unknown number of future ones how to use their mail clients?

Let me correct you -- Kubuntu, not Ubuntu. Those are completely different things. But surely, both "change reply-to" vs. "don't change reply-to" and Kubuntu vs. Debian are cases of "things that work" vs. "thing that pretend to be right" decision.

for the mailing list where I decide, I always make reply-to point to the list. I don’t give a damn about what RFC say — I merely want all replies to be sent to the list

Pundits are on the march? I don't know who you was going to reach with this post, but for the mailing list where I decide, I always make reply-to point to the list. I don't give a damn about what RFC say -- I merely want all replies to be sent to the list, and I don't want to go after every subscriber educating him about "Reply-to/Reply-to-author/Reply-to-list" functionality.
